About CEMAT

CEMAT (Center for Computational and Stochastic Mathematics) is a Research Unit of Instituto Superior Técnico, Universidade de Lisboa (IST-UL), hosted by the Department of Mathematics. CEMAT was founded in 1996 with the original name of Center for Applied Mathematics, and later named Center for Mathematics and its Applications.  The Center is funded by FCT (Fundação para a Ciência e a Tecnologia), Project UID/Multi/04621/2020 and is a member of CIM (International Mathematics Center). Presently, it has 38 PhD Members from several institutions, 9 PhD Students and 41 Collaborators.

A boundary control problem for stochastic 2D-Navier-Stokes equations

In this talk, we discuss a stochastic velocity tracking problem for the 2D-Navier-Stokes equations perturbed by a multiplicative Gaussian noise. From physical point of view, the control acts through a boundary injection/suction device with uncertainty, modelled by non-h...

The fractional nonlinear Schrödinger equation. Modelling, theory and numerical approximation

In this talk several issues of the fractional nonlinear Schrödinger equation are analysed. Some properties of the equation enable the use of Concentration-Compactness theory to prove the existence of solitary wave solutions with algebraic decay. Then a numerical approa...

Can a set of strong learners create a single stronger learner?

Since the coined question in 1986 “Can a set of weak learners create a single strong learner?”, ensemble learning has been focused on merging simple machine learning methods in order to increase predictive performance. Characteristics such as stability and diversity...
