We survey several recent results about classes of matrices for which it is somewhat difficult to check membership, but for which there is an obvious necessary condition that becomes sufficient "eventually" in terms of some continuous "powering" One example is the recent result that the matrices that are totally positive after a sufficiently high Hadamard power are just the TP2 matrices.
