1+1=2: applications to direct products of semigroups

I will present two theorems concerning finiteness conditions of direct products of (infinite) semigroups. One is about finite generation, and the other about residual finiteness. In both the fact that 1+1 equals 2, and not, for example, 1, will apply a crucial role:-) I will discuss related topics, such as finite presentability, d-sequences, and some interesting open problems.
