This series of lectures is aimed to survey some parts of semigroup representation theory. The first part will address classical results on how to construct linear irreducible representations of finite semigroups. The primary motivation for the main construction is to study transitive representations of semigroups by (partial) transformations. The second part will describe more recent developments on effective representations of semigroups and on representations which can be obtained using higher representation theory. The basic prerequisits are: basics of semigroup theory (Green's relations, classical transformation semigroups) and basic linear algebra. For the last lecture some basic category theory will be very useful.
