Epimorphisms of rings with applications

We introduce and motivate the notion of epimorphisms in mathematics. Then we examine the (subtle) case of rings. We give a number of examples, with particular attention to epimorphisms induced by topological embeddings. Recent joint work with Barr, Burgess, and Woods is described.
